18 Year-Old Woman Charged With Public Mischief After 4 Hour Stand-off

WINNIPEG – A 4 1/2 hour stand-off involving 5 tactical support teams, 6 general patrol units, K-9, EMS and other personnel resulted in public mischief charges against an 18 year-old woman.

The woman called police on February 7th at about 6:00 am stating that a man armed with a firearm had banged on her door and asked her to hide the gun, along with drugs in her suite.

She gave a detailed description of the suspect and was adamant that he was in a neighbouring suite. The risk to public safety was taken very seriously, and significant police service resources were deployed.

After 4 1/2 hours and a review of security footage it was determined that the suspect was not in the suite and in fact no one had come to the caller’s door. The entire incident was determined to be completely fabricated and the 18 year-old woman was charged with public mischief. She was released on an Appearance Notice.

The Winnipeg Police Service reminds the public of the serious consequences of making a false report that causes police to enter into an investigation based on a false or misleading statement.
