WINNIPEG – Whitehead & Hoag made this antique match case in the early 1900’s for the Northern Elevator Company of Winnipeg.
Northern Elevator was established in 1893 through the merger of five smaller companies.
It quickly became a big business, handling 2.4 million bushels of grain a year at 92 prairie elevators by the turn of the 20th century.
Like many successful businesses, it was memorialized by a variety of trinkets, including this celluloid vesta match safe.
Because it’s in near mint condition, the price of this rare item elevated quickly on eBay, selling for over $630!
