BerMax Cafe Hate-Crime Staged by Owners

WINNIPEG – Winnipeg police have arrested three people following the hate-crime incident that took place at BerMax Cafe on April 18.

Three owners of the BerMax Cafe have been charged with Public Mischief after the investigation revealed that the incident had been staged. 56 year-old Alexander Berent, 48 year-old Oxana Berent and 29 year-old Maxim Berent were arrested on April 24.

Public Mischief (CCC 140 (1)) occurs when an individual, with intent to mislead, causes a peace officer to enter on or continue an investigation based on a false statement or causing another person to be suspected of having committed an offence to divert suspicion from themselves.
