WINNIPEG – An attempt to help an injured man turned violent for police when they responded to a call on Guay Avenue on July 7.
When police arrived at the home, they found a man lying on the front steps. Residents of the home told police that he was injured and when they tried to check on him, he became violent.
The man charged and punched an officer, knocking him to the ground. He then attempted to disarm the officer of his firearm. A conducted electrical weapon (“Taser”) was used to take him into custody. The man was taken to hospital and later spit in the face of an officer.
29 year-old Joey Wesley Sumner has been charged with assaulting a peace officer (X2), disarming a peace officer and resisting a peace officer. He was detained in custody.
