WINNIPEG – Police had to use a taser on a man and woman caught trying to steal a vehicle near Logan Avenue and Quelch Street Thursday morning.
At 4:15 AM police responded to a call of two people breaking into a vehicle. Officers found a man and a woman inside the vehicle when they arrived. As officers attempted to arrest the individuals, the man became combative.
One officer was punched in the head and the man then attempted to grab at both the officer’s baton and gun. The other officer deployed a taser which caused the man to let go of the gun and take off.
At the same time, the woman started the ignition using a key that had been left inside the vehicle, and started backing up. Officers then used the taser to safely take her into custody.
Additional officers arrived to help. The man was located nearby in the 1500 block of Logan Avenue. One officer was bitten on the hand as the man was taken into custody.
In total, three officers suffered minor injuries.
Andre Ricardo Laidlow, a 43-year-old man from Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Assault a Peace Officer (x3)
- Resist Peace Officer
- Disarming a Peace Officer
- Theft of Motor Vehicle
Jennifer Ashley Disbrowe, a 34-year-old woman from Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Resist Peace Officer
- Driving While Ability Impaired
- Theft of Motor Vehicle
They have been detained in custody.
