Passenger Trains Are Back

Manitoba Post StaffNews

WINNIPEG – VIA Rail is once again operating on its Winnipeg-to-Vancouver route as the first in a gradual return to service in Western Canada. One weekly round trip will be offered along the rail line, with the Crown corporation highlighting enhanced ventilation, accessibility, PPE, and physical distancing measures on its railcars.

VIA says passengers must wear a mask the whole time they’re on board or in a train station unless they’re in an enclosed cabin or eating, and must stay in their cabin or assigned seat during the ride. The trip takes four days, with a few stops along the way.

The company is seeking emergency government funding after a reduction of service across Canada that brought an 82 per cent drop in ridership and an 84 per cent decrease in revenue.
