Queen’s Council Designation Returns to Manitoba

WINNIPEG, MB.– Manitoba lawyers who demonstrate exceptional merit will once again be recognized, as the government introduces new legislation that will reinstate the Queen’s Council designation. (Q.C.)

“Our province benefits from the expertise, integrity and dedication of the many excellent lawyers practising in Manitoba,” said Minister Heather Stefanson. “I am pleased to introduce legislation that will allow us to recognize and honour exceptional contributions with the designation of Queen’s Counsel.”

The Queen’s Counsel Act would allow the province to provide this honourary title to a lawyer, based on recommendations from the minister and an advisory council, which would include members of the public and the legal community.

Practising and retired lawyers would be eligible to be recognized with this designation, with other criteria to include:

  • outstanding practice as a lawyer;
  • demonstrated integrity;
  • contributions to excellence in the profession; and
  • a minimum of 10 years in practice.
