WINNIPEG – Many Winnipeggers will be looking to the skies tonight to watch the total lunar eclipse, also known as a “blood moon” because the moon appears red in the sky.
The total lunar eclipse will be fully visible in Winnipeg on Sunday night.
What is a lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly behind Earth and into its shadow. This can only happen when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are exactly or very closely aligned (in syzygy), with Earth between the other two. During a total lunar eclipse, Earth completely blocks direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.

Experts say the lunar eclipse will begin around 8:36 p.m. but won’t be fully visible until approximately 11:12 p.m. ending around 11:43 p.m.
