TORONTO, ON . – Two commercial planes collided on the tarmac of Toronto International Airport last evening.

According to several media reports, the collision sparked a small fire, resulting in dozens of passengers having to be evacuated Friday night.

Reports suggest that a Sunwing Airlines plane that backed out while being towed, struck a WestJet plane that was waiting to proceed to their gate that had arrived from Cancun.

WestJet airlines has confirmed, in a Tweet, that due to the position of the plane, passengers were evacuated via the emergency slide. All 168 passengers and six crew members aboard the airplane deplaned and were taken safely to the terminal.

There were no passengers or crew members aboard the Sunwing Airlines aircraft, the airline tweeted. The aircraft was being towed by a “ground handling service provider.”
