Winnipeg Man Assaults Guard and Chases a Family

WINNIPEG, MB. – Stephen Andrews, a 29-year-old male of Winnipeg, is facing several charges after breaking in to residences on Ellen Street and assaulting a security officer.

On Friday, December 29, police responded to a call at a residential complex in first 100 block of Ellen Street. A male was initially banging on doors and then broke into a suite.

Police quickly located Andrews, and placed him under arrest.

The investigation lead police to determine that the suspect was at complex and began to pry at windows and patio doors in an attempt to gain entry. A security guard was alerted and confronted Andrews, who grabbed a piece of wood and struck the security officer across the head.

He then continued to attempt to break into suites, finally forcing open a door of a suite where a family was sleeping. The family woke and fled the suite while the suspect rummaged through rooms.

He exited the suite briefly and chased the family at which time they ran into a neighbouring suite to take cover.

The suspect then uttered threats to shoot the officers who took him into custody.

In a news release, police said they believe that the incident began with the suspect using methamphetamine.

Charged, is Stephen Michael Andrews, a 29-year-old from Winnipeg, with the following:

  • Break & Enter with Intent – Dwelling House (x3)
  • Break Enter & Commit – Dwelling House
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order
  • Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm
