WINNIPEG – A growing number of asylum seekers is putting pressure on shelters in Winnipeg.

The Salvation Army’s Centre of Hope says it is seeing about 120 refugee claimants on a daily basis.

The federal government processed 185 people seeking asylum in Manitoba in January which is five times the number from a year ago.

Provincial housing minister Bernadette Smith says her NDP government is working to improve the level of affordable housing for asylum seekers.
