17-Year-Old Leads Winnipeg Police on a Chase

Winnipeg, MB – 17-Year-old steals a car, that was left running, and leads police on a chase then tries to run.

Police said in a release that a young man stole a car from the 300 block of Sydney Avenue. The car, unoccupied, was left running in the back alley behind a home. The young man drove off with the vehicle around 5:55 a.m. December 15.

Moments later, police spotted the stolen vehicle in the area of Redwood Avenue and Main Street. The vehicle, travelling at a high rate of speed, failed to stop for a red light at the intersection and continued westbound.

Police pursued the vehicle to the area of Redwood Avenue and Arlington Street where it was involved in a collision and struck both a light standard and a tree. The driver of the stolen car continued to flee until the vehicle came to a stop in the 800 block of Redwood Avenue.

At this point, the driver exited the stolen vehicle and attempted to run but was quickly caught by officers after a short foot pursuit.

A 17-year-old male of Winnipeg has been charged with:

  • Theft of Motor Vehicle
  • Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
  • Fail to Comply Condition Undertaking by Judge/Justice
