WINNIPEG, MB. – Xtreme Bugs is coming to the Zoo this summer. Presented by Artis REIT 19 giant animatronic bugs will be featured along the forested trail inside the Zoo. Experience just how amazing the world would look from a bug’s eye view as you’re transported into this amazing new environment.

Immersed in the larger-than-life landscape of Xtreme BUGS, visitors will be surrounded by giant, animatronic insects including a 21 foot Japanese hornet and a 13 foot praying mantis, for an up-close look at the physical characteristics of bugs and the science behind the behaviours of these (usually) tiny creatures that share our ecosystem.

“This is going to be an exciting and immersive experience for visitors of all ages”, said Grant Furniss, Sr. Director, Animal Care & Conservation at Assiniboine Park Zoo. “Bugs have a critical role to play in our environments and we’re hoping to share those stories through this engaging exhibit. The exaggerated size and characteristics of these creatures is going to be fascinating.”

Interpretive components of the exhibit will help visitors understand the science behind insect appearance, behaviour, and survival and the important role that bugs play in our everyday environment. By exploring the way bugs look and behave as they do, Xtreme BUGS will invite a new perspective of these interesting creatures.

In addition to the exhibit itself, the Zoo will be offering specific bug-themed programs and workshops for pre-school aged children and school groups for an additional cost. The exhibit experience will be included in regular Zoo admission and will be in Winnipeg for a limited time only, starting this summer. As preparations for the exhibit proceed, a specific opening date will be announced later this spring.
