WINNIPEG, MB. – You can do your part for Earth Day all week long at the Assiniboine Park Conservancy by dropping off old batteries and cell phones at Wild Things Unique Gifts.
“Call2Recycle is proud to partner with Assiniboine Park Conservancy for their used battery drive,” said Joe Zenobio, president of Call2Recycle Canada, Inc. “Earth Day is a great opportunity to demonstrate support for environmental protection, and this is a fantastic eco-friendly event to educate and engage the greater community on battery recycling.”
Assiniboine Park Zoo is also celebrating Earth Day with two action packed days of family fun on April 21 and 22. Visitors can be environmental superheroes and learn about conservation and what they can do at home, at work and in their communities to be kind to our earth.
The following activities will take place on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22:
DRESS UP AS A SUPERHERO
Who is your favourite superhero? The first 100 visitors each day dressed in a superhero costume will receive a FREE ice cream cone at the Tundra Grill.
SUPERHERO PHOTO STATION
Visitors don’t need to have superpowers to hang out with superheroes. Fans can bring their camera, have their photo taken, and get an autograph! Saturday (11 am to 1 pm) – Spiderman, Super Girl and Winston, the polar bear
Sunday (11 am to 1 pm) – Captain American, Wonder Woman and Winston, the polar bear
GIANT CHALK WALL
Superheroes (dressed in costume and not) are encouraged to stop by the chalk wall and tell us how they plan to save the world!
REDUCE & RE-USE TEXTILE CRAFT STATION
It’s SUPER easy to be SUPER green! Our amazing volunteers will show visitors how they can reduce waste and re-use old textiles like shirts to make bags, baskets, and SUPERHERO CAPES!
HANG WITH THE GIBBONS
Gibbons are SUPER cool animals. Visitors can check out a gibbons Zoo Chat at 11 am and 2 pm on both days with our gibbon animal care givers. Plus, they can visit the interpretative station to learn how palm oil harvesting affects gibbon habitat in the wild and how they can use their superhero powers to help the environment.
“Earth is our most precious asset and the Park and Zoo are perfect places to connect with nature and learn about ways you can conserve it,” said Grant Furniss, Senior Director of Animal Care and Conservation. “We encourage people to be a part of our battery and cellphone drive and join the Superhero Party at the Zoo as it is a fun way to learn that we can all make a meaningful contribution to our environment.”
Wait, there’s more!
In honour of Earth Day, we will be hosting a Facebook Earth Week Challenge. Followers can learn how the Assiniboine Park Conservancy is working to fight climate change and learn what you can do at home with our daily Earth Day challenge.
The Zoo is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. All activities are FREE with regular Zoo admission. Battery and cellphones can be dropped off at Wild Things Unique Gifts, which is accessible with or without Zoo admission.
