Celebrate International Polar Bear Day

WINNIPEG, MB – International Polar Bear Day is Tuesday February 27th, and to celebrate Assiniboine Park Zoo will have activities all weekend long.

“Saving our sea ice, which is vital to the survival of Arctic species, is something we can all help to achieve,” said Grant Furniss, Senior Director of Animal Care and Conservation. “Whether it’s turning the thermostat down or raising awareness, we hope to encourage visitors to learn about the impacts of climate change on polar bears and how they can contribute and make a difference “

This will also be the last weekend of events for Northern Explorer Month where visitors who have paid one fee can come back for free.

The following specialty events will take place over the weekend in support of International Polar Bear Day:

  • Breakfast with Bears on Saturday, February 24 and Sunday, February 25. 9 am – breakfast service begins, 10 am – Polar bear presentation begins. Feast on Tundra Grill’s delicious breakfast as you learn everything COOL about polar bears and conservation at this one-of-a-kind Zoo talk. You don’t want to miss this! ($)
  • Playtime in the Arctic – Saturday, February 24 and Sunday, February 25 I 11 am to 3 pm. Visitors can warm up at Gateway to the Arctic and check out the hands enrichment and research table, photo stations and zoo talks. PLUS! Learn how to reduce your waste and re-use your old clothes to make bags, baskets, quilts and more.
  • Heavy Horse Wagon Rides – Saturday, February 24 and Sunday, February 25 I starting at 1 pm. Learn about our amazing heavy horses at the McFeetors Heavy Horse Centre. Then climb aboard the wagon and enjoy a trail ride in the Zoo. ($3)
  • Northern Explorer Expedition – Grab a Northern Explorer map at the Zoo entrance and check out the “cool” spots around the Zoo to collect your Northern Explorer reward!

The Zoo will be open from 9 am to 4 pm all weekend.
