City Issues Storm Bulletin #1

Manitoba PostNational News

WINNIPEG, MB – The City of Winnipeg has released it’s first special Bulletin due to winter weather conditions.

Several city departments are experiencing service delays and interruptions.

Plowing Update

Winnipeg received over 15 cm of heavy wet snow with the majority falling between midnight and 6:00 a.m. Spreaders salted roadways throughout the night to improve conditions.

Plows were deployed at midnight and worked through the night on the main routes. Sidewalk plows worked overnight in the Downtown area and will continue on the main routes throughout the day.

We are anticipating more snow accumulation today and we will be assessing the residential and back lane networks.

The City of Winnipeg has over 200 pieces of equipment deployed. Crews will be moving to the bus route/collector (Priority 2’s) during the rush hour and then back to the main routes.

The declared snow route parking ban remains in effect until Wednesday March 7 at 7:00 a.m.

Winnipeg Transit and Handi Transit

Due to weather conditions, Winnipeg Transit is experiencing delays and we recommend that Transit users allow for extra travel time.

We remind Transit users to check their schedule before travelling.

For route and schedule information, please visit winnipegtransit.com or contact 311, open 24 hours every day, by phone at 311 or by email at 311@winnipeg.ca

Handi Transit clients are being asked to please cancel any non-essential trips planned for today by calling 204-986-5711. Clients should stay on the line if they need to speak to an agent.

Water and Waste

The Brady Road Resource Management Facility and the Brady, Panet and Pacific 4R Winnipeg Depots are open and will be operating under regular hours.

Garbage and recycling collection is not expected to be completed today.

If today (Monday) is your collection day, please leave your carts out until 10:00 p.m. tonight. If your carts have not been collected by 10:00 p.m., please put them away to allow for snow clearing and then place them out by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Brookside, Transcona or St. Vital cemeteries are closed to the public until 10:00 a.m., as crews work to clear roadways.

The public is advised to avoid visiting the facilities today unless necessary.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service

Adverse weather conditions affect travel times for all vehicles on the road, including emergency vehicles. WFPS is currently experiencing longer response times.

To help improve response times today, four extra ambulances have been placed in service.

Response times are being monitored and additional resources will be placed on duty if necessary.

The City of Winnipeg would like to thank citizens for their patience. We will continue to provide updates as conditions change.
