WINNIPEG – The driver of a stolen van leads police on a short pursuit then slams into a Manitoba Hydro distribution line and a traffic signal control panel.
Thanksgiving Monday, just after midnight, police tried to stop a stolen van near Logan Avenue and McPhillips Street. The driver took off at a high rate of speed. As AIR1 began to track the vehicle, the driver lost control of the van on Logan Avenue near Sherbrook Street and collided with a Hydro distribution line and a traffic signal control panel.
Police said the driver tried to run, but was no match for the K9 unit who tracked him to the front of a home on Alexander Avenue. The man then resisted arrest and was eventually taken into custody.
Inside the stolen van, police found six shotgun shells. Five .22 calibre cartridges were later found to be in the man’s posession.
The intersection of Sherbrook Street and Logan Avenue was closed until approximately 9:00 a.m. while Manitoba Hydro worked to repair the damaged line that had fallen across the road.
Manitoba Hydro and City of Winnipeg damages are estimated at approximately $120,000.
A 37-year-old man from Winnipeg has been arrested for:
- Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
- Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
- Resist Peace Officer
- Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (x2)
- Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 (x2)
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x3)
