WINNIPEG, MB – The Winnipeg Goldeyes added to their already impressive roster by signing catcher Miguel Gonzalez on Monday.

The 27-year-old backstop from Porlamar, Venzuela suited up in 50 games in the Detroit Tigers organization last season, splitting time with the Triple-A International League’s Toledo Mud Hens and the Double-A Eastern League’s Erie Seawolves, where he hit .220 with four home runs and 12 RBI’s.

What Gonzalez brings to the Goldeyes is a strong arm from behind the plate to help shut down their opponents running game. Gonzalez has ranked first or second in his league in caught stealing percentage six times over his first 10 professional seasons and from 2009-2013 Baseball America rated Gonzalez “Top Defensive Catcher” in the Chicago White Sox organization.

I’m thrilled to add a catcher like Miguel,” said Goldeyes’ manager Rick Forney. His experience will be invaluable to the pitching staff. It was very important for me to add a second catcher that has the ability to shut down the running game.”

Gonzalez originally signed with the Chicago White Sox as an international free agent in 2008, making his professional debut later that summer at age 17. In 2013, Gonzalez would make his major league debut, appearing in five games for the White Sox.

The Goldeyes now have 17 players under contract for the upcoming season and fans can get their first look at the club when spring training gets underway May 6th.
