WINNIPEG – It’s back to TV for Winnipeg Blue Bombers fans, but there is still plenty to do in Winnipeg this weekend if you’re a sports enthusiast.

While the Bombers head into B.C. Place Stadium on Saturday night (9 p.m. CDT on TSN) to partake of a re-match with the B.C. Lions — the team Winnipeg whipped 41-19 at Investors Group Field last week — the Goldeyes open a three-game series at Shaw Park against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Friday night (7 p.m. CDT) and there are two big nights of thoroughbred racing on Friday and Saturday night at Assiniboia Downs.

The Goldeyes play Gary on Friday at 7, Saturday at 6 and Sunday at 1. The defending American Association champions went into the weekend trailing North Division leading St. Paul by 5 ½ games.

Meanwhile, there is plenty of amateur baseball this weekend, as well. On Friday night, the final weekend of the regular season opens for the Manitoba Junior Baseball League as the Pembina Valley Orioles play the Bisons in Altona and the St. James A’s meet the Interlake Blue Jays. On Sunday, it’s a doubleheader with the Elmwood Giants taking on the Marlins in Brandon. The MJBL playoffs begin next Friday night.

There are two games on Friday and one on Sunday in the Winnipeg Senior Baseball League. On Friday at 7 p.m. St. James plays the St. Boniface Legionaires at Whittier Park while the North Winnipeg Pirates meet the Springfield Braves at Braves Field. On Sunday at 7 p.m., Springfield plays the Boni-Vital Brewers at Whittier Park.

If you like thoroughbred race horses, and who doesn’t, Assiniboia Downs has three important stakes races on the schedule this weekend:

  • Friday, July 13: Live racing 7:15 p.m. Jack Hardy Stakes.
  • Saturday, July 14: Simulcast, $750,000 Delaware Handicap, $500,000 Indiana Derby. Live racing at 7:15 p.m. The R. C. Anderson Stakes and The Harry Jeffrey Derby Prep.

Of course, if you like your sports on TV, there is plenty of Blue Jays baseball on Sportsnet as Toronto plays the Red Sox at Fenway Park at 6:10 p.m. on Friday, 12:05 p.m. on Saturday and 12:05 p.m. on Sunday. As well, TSN has the World Cup Final between France and Croatia live from Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia at 10 a.m. CDT.

We’ll be in Washington, D.C. this weekend getting ready for the Midsummer Classic, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game and Home Run Derby from Nationals Park on Monday and Tuesday nights.

No matter how you take your sports, Manitoba Post will be watching the games with you this weekend.
