WINNIPEG – The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Josh Mazzola hit his en route to a 5-2 win over the Chicago Dogs on Friday night at Shaw Park.

The Goldeyes got on the board first when Jordan Edgerton ripped a shot to right-centre field that bounced to the wall, scoring Josh Mazzola and giving Winnipeg a 1-0 lead.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth inning. With some great patience at the plate, the Goldeyes loaded the bases, and Dogs pitcher Michael Wagner would walk Jordan Ebert, scoring Matt McCann from third, doubling their lead.

Next batter up was Kevin Garcia who hit a two-run single to left field, scoring Andrew Sohn and Reynaldo Rodriguez, putting the Fish up 4-0, ending the night for Wagner.

Goldeyes Charle Rosario was fantastic on the mound for Winnipeg, giving up just four hits and striking out three in seven shutout innings.

Chicago had their best chance to get back in the game in the top of the eighth inning. The Dogs loaded the bases with just one out, and Cameron McVeigh struck out Craig Maddox, Jonathan Maroney hit a line drive to left field that would score a pair of runs to cut the lead to 4-2.

Josh Mazzola, the Goldeyes put an exclamation point on the win with a line-drive shot over the wall in left field, giving Winnipeg a 5-2 lead. The homer was Mazzola’s third of the season and franchise leading 73rd of his Goldeyes career.

Closer Victor Capellan came into the game in the bottom of the ninth and picked up his league-leading ninth save of the season.

The two clubs are back at it Saturday night in game two of their three game series. First pitch is scheduled at 7:05 at Shaw Park.
