WINNIPEG – Police, security guards and loss prevention officers are facing increasing violence against them and this long weekend there were five incidents where officers were assaulted.

On August 31, at approximately 1:30 a.m., police responded to a fight involving a man and woman at a gathering on Chestnut Street.

The woman soaked one officer with beer and then struck him in the face with a bottle as he tried to diffuse the situation and then kicked another officer in the groin as she was taken into custody.

She later spat a large amount of bloody saliva into the face of one of the officers as they attempted to speak with her and threatened to kill both of them.

31 year-old Bridget Debbi Mason has been charged with:

– Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon

– Aggravated Assault of Peace Officer

– Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm (x2)

– Resist Peace Officer

She was detained in custody.

Again, On August 31 at about 5:15 P.M., police located a woman that was subject of an arrest warrant for failing to attend court.

As she was being handcuffed, she became belligerent and spat in the face of an officer while making a threat to kill him. The female remained aggressive throughout her arrest.

21 year-old Shaylene Rosemary Sutherland of Sandy Bay First Nation has been charged with:

– Assault a Peace Officer

– Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm

She was detained in custody.

Half an hour later a security guard was punched in the head and her glasses broke when she tried to get a woman who was causing a disturbance in a business to leave. A second security guard responded, and the woman spat in his face before kicking him in the chest. She was taken into custody and turned over to members of the Winnipeg Police Service.

20 year-old Jasmine Sadie Owen has been charged with:

– Assault (x2)

– Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment

– Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice

She was detained in custody.

On August 30 a female attempted to steal merchandise from a business on Portage Avenue but was confronted by an employee along with a security guard.

The female returned the property but refused to leave and punched the employee in the face. She was subsequently taken into custody and turned over to members of the Winnipeg Police Service.

A 32-year-old female of Winnipeg will be charged with:

– Assault

She was released on a Promise to Appear.

On August 30 at approximately 5:40 p.m., police responded to the first 100 block of Marion Street for a report of a robbery.

Three females had entered a retail store, at which time one female stole merchandise and left without paying. A loss prevention officer attempted to stop the female and was sprayed with a substance believed to be bear spray. The three females then fled.

The substance also affected numerous other shoppers who were assessed and treated by members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
