WINNIPEG — A grand chief who represents First Nations in northern Manitoba says Indigenous people continue to suffer from racism by the province’s energy corporation.

Garrison Settee says Indigenous people are being treated like second−class citizens on their own land, even during present−day Manitoba Hydro projects.

Settee was joined by Martina Saunders, an Indigenous woman who has filed a complaint with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission.

Saunders says she resigned last year from a board of directors that has been overseeing construction of a generating station, because she and other Indigenous members were being ignored and bullied.

A report released last month by an arm’s−length environmental commission cited racism, discrimination and sexual abuse at Manitoba Hydro work sites in the 1960s.

The utility has said it is taking the report’s allegations seriously and is co−operating with an RCMP investigation into the abuse allegations.
