New Overpass for Portage la Prairie

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, MB – The overpass along PTH 1A at the Trans-Canada Highway on the west side of Portage la Prairie is going to be replaced.

The province is in the initial stages of replacing the structure that was built in 1968 and design work will start later this year said Minister Ron Schuler.

“The existing overpass is nearing the end of its life cycle and will need to be replaced in the future,” said Schuler. “This overpass has also been struck a number of times over the past 10 years and is currently only used in one direction, diverting some traffic through Portage la Prairie.”

The height of the structure as well as other national design standards will be taken into consideration during the design process. During removal of the existing structure and construction of the new overpass, safety will be a primary concern, with appropriate signage and traffic controls in place.

“The current limited use of the overpass is safe, but it is time to look at replacing it to ensure the future safe and efficient movement of people and goods,” said Schuler. “As construction season ramps up for the spring and summer, we remind all motorists to be careful around work areas and slow down.”
