Police Chase Ends with Stolen Civic Crashing into a Taxi

WINNIPEG – A 23-year-old man leads police on a chase in Winnipeg reaching speeds of 100km/h and crashes into a taxi cab.

Police said on Tuesday a 2014 Honda Civic was stolen from Osborne St. North. A short time later, about 8:30AM, police spotted the stolen Civic on Ellice Ave. When officers stopped the Civic the driver accelerated forward violently striking the front push-bar of a second police vehicle. The driver then fled the area in the stolen Civic at a high rate of speed.

The driver reached speeds in excess of 100 km/h and drove into oncoming traffic on Century St. A short time later the Civic collided with a taxi at the intersection of Berry St. and Ellice Ave. causing extensive damage. The driver of the taxi and a passenger were taken to hospital in stable condition. The suspect took off on foot but was captured a short distance away.

David Dempsey-Daley, 23, was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Flight While Pursued by Police Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Drive While Disqualified
  • Assault Peace Officer with a Weapon
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle x 2
  • Fail to Stop at Scene of Accident
