WINNIPEG, MB – The province is looking for input from Manitobans through a new online survey, now available, established to support the development of the a new poverty reduction strategy.

The survey has been created with information collected from recent in-person consultations and will remain open until March 23.

“It is important to hear from people who have experienced poverty, service providers, experts, advocates and all interested Manitobans,” said Minister Fielding. “This survey will help capture a diversity of experiences and identify pathways forward.”

Consultations began in November 2017 with a call for written submissions, community workshops and lived-experience conversations. More than 230 people have shared their experiences and ideas at in-person sessions in Winnipeg, Selkirk, Brandon, Thompson, Flin Flon, The Pas and Dauphin.

The development of a renewed strategy supports The Poverty Reduction Strategy Act, which requires the Manitoba government to review and update its plan every five years. Feedback from consultations, as well as advice from the Poverty Reduction Committee, which currently comprises five ministers and three community members, will help inform Manitoba’s forthcoming Poverty Reduction Strategy. The ministers expect the strategy to be released later in 2018.

“Reducing and preventing poverty remains a priority for this government as we work toward being the most improved province,” said Minister Wishart. “While there is still work to be done, we are committed to providing a broad range of supports and services to Manitoba’s most vulnerable, and to hear from those who have innovative ideas to address the complex issues around poverty.”
