WINNIPEG – The parent council at a Winnipeg school is asking that it be renamed.
Wolseley School, and the surrounding neighbourhood, is named after Colonel Garnet Wolseley.
His role in the 1870 Red River Rebellion has been criticized by Indigenous groups.
A biography on the school’s website says Garnet Wolseley commanded the force sent to quell the rebellion which was led by Louis Riel.
The chair of the Winnipeg School Division’s board of trustees says the request will move toward public consultation.
