Teenager Hospitalized After Violent Assault

WINNIPEG – Two teenagers were rescued by passing police as they were being assaulted on the street.

Police were driving in the area of Salter Street and Selkirk Avenue at about 3:20 AM. on June 1 when they heard a commotion and saw three men assaulting a teenage boy.

The men fled as soon as they saw police and one of the officers chased them while the other officer stayed with the injured boy. With the assistance of the K9 Unit, two suspects were found attempting to hide against a nearby building and were taken into custody.

The victim was transported to hospital in unstable condition and was later upgraded to stable condition. A second male victim was located suffering from injuries but did not require a transport to hospital.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit continued with the investigation. It is believed that the two teenage victims were walking in the area when they were confronted by three suspects who attempted to rob them.

At approximately 2:40 p.m., a third suspect was located and was taken into custody.

23 year-old Samuel James Custer has been charged with:

– Robbery

– Assault Cause Bodily Harm (x2)

20 year-old Justin Sandy has been charged with:

– Robbery

– Assault Cause Bodily Harm (x2)

He was also processed on an outstanding warrant for:

– Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x2)

18 year-old Ralph Joseph Chartrand has been charged with:

– Robbery

– Assault Cause Bodily Harm (x2)

– Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice

They were detained in custody.
