WINNIPEG, MB – At the 2018 U SPORTS Swimming Championships being held at the University of Toronto, Manitoba Bison second year women’s swimmer Kelsey Wog finished with a gold medal on day one of the competition.
Wog then went back-to-back gold medal performances with a gold in the women’s 200m breaststroke on day two.
Wog, 19, defended her title that she won as a rookie as she was first in the 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:06.26.
In addition to Wog, Bison first year swimmer Dora Modrcin, 18, finished seventh in the women’s 50m backstroke (28.32). Bison third year Anthony Iliouchetchev, 20, finished ninth by winning the ‘B Final’ in the men’s 50m backstroke (25.43) – an improvement form last season’s U SPORTS finish of 18th in the same event. Bison third year Alex Shogolev, 20, was 20th in the men’s 50m backstroke (26.38). The Bison women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team – Wog, Modrcin plus fourth year Gio Wickett, 22, and rookie Alexandria Miko, 18, – was eighth (3:50.91).
On day two, Wog bettered her last season’s Championship result of third place and won the women’s 200m breaststroke event in a time of 2:21.84 – a full three second ahead of her nearest competitor.
Modrcin made her second Final swim and ended up eighth in the women’s 100m backstroke (1:01.81). Iliouchetchev swam to a sixth place in the men’s 100m backstroke (54.48) while Shogolev was 19th (56.80) in the same event. Iliouchetchev was tenth place in the men’s 50m freestyle (22.96) and Shogolev was 14th (23.19) in the same event.
There are over 20 teams for each male and female competing at this year’s U SPORTS Swimming Championships.
The three day 2018 U SPORTS Swimming Championships will be completed on Saturday, February 24 with more medal chances for Wog in the women’s 50 breaststroke and 200m IM on the final day.
