WINNIPEG, MB. – A 73-year-old Winkler man died in a two-vehicle collision Monday evening on the Perimeter Highway and Oakland Road.
In a news release the RCMP said it was determined that a semi-truck with trailer, being driven by a 43-year-old man from Winnipeg, was driving eastbound on Oakland Road and was attempting to turn north onto the Perimeter Highway. The semi drove across the southbound lane and waited for traffic to clear in the northbound lane before proceeding. It’s believed the semi’s trailer was blocking parts of the southbound lanes of the Perimeter, when a vehicle travelling southbound, being driven by a 73-year-old man from Winkler, collided with the trailer.
The driver of the vehicle, who was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision, was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi driver was not injured.
Witnesses reports indicate that just prior to this accident, a dark-coloured SUV had to swerve around the semi-trailer in order to avoid hitting it. The SUV did not stop as the driver may not have been aware of the accident that occurred after it had passed the semi.
RCMP are hoping to speak to the driver of the SUV or anyone else who may have witnessed this collision. You are asked to call RCMP Headingley Traffic Services at 204-984-6913.
