Winnipeg Woman and Grand Rapids Man Charged in Recent Shooting

WINNIPEG, MB. – Police have charged a woman from Winnipeg and a man from Grand Rapids in connection with a shooting on December 14th in the city.

Police responded to a call of a man who had been shot in the 100 block of Hargrave Street. When police arrived they found a man in his 20’s suffering from a significant gunshot wound to his lower body. At the time the man was transported to hospital in critical condition and upgraded to stable condition later that day.

Police said there was also an adult female at the scene with minor injuries. She was transported to hospital in stable condition.

Winnipeg Police now say the female they found has been placed under arrest. After being medically treated the same day, she was turned over to members of the Major Crimes Unit.

Serenity Georgia Contois, a 21-year-old female from Winnipeg, was charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Discharge a Firearm with Intent
  • Possession of a Weapon

Police determined there was a second suspect in the shooting. They believe the two were socializing with the victim when an argument broke out between the three parties. The argument escalated to the point where the suspects armed themselves with a shotgun and fired it at the victim. The suspects then fled the area.

Officers did find a firearm hidden in the area of Hargrave Street and St. Mary Avenue. It was was a sawed-off 12 gauge shotgun that had been reported stolen in October 1998.

Yesterday, December 30th, police, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team located the second suspect at a residential complex in the 100 block of Hargrave.

Deon Lam, a 34-year-old male from Grand Rapids, has been charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Discharge a Firearm with Intent
  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon
  • Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
  • Careless Use of Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Possession of a Firearm, Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Obtained by Crime
