WINNIPEG – A 6 month-old child was severely injured while in the care of woman who ran an unlicensed, in-home day care.
On October 10, 2018, Winnipeg Police Service became involved in an investigation regarding a severely injured 6-month-old child.
Winnipeg Police officers, by coincidence, attended the home on October 10, 2018, on another matter and the child was seen in good health. Later that day the victim’s parents picked the child up and the child appeared to be in severe medical distress. His condition worsened and he was taken by ambulance to Children’s Hospital.
A medical assessment revealed that the victim was suffering from multiple serious head injuries as a result of significant head trauma.
An extensive investigation by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Child Abuse Unit was initiated. On June 26, 2019 detectives arrested the daycare operator, 37 year-old Annette Akerhor Onakpoya and charged her with Aggravated Assault.
She was detained in custody.
