WINNIPEG – If you are only in Winnipeg for a quick visit, you owe it to yourself to make the short drive over the St. James bridge to 1700 Corydon Ave.
Awaiting you there will be a sublime, house-made corned beef sandwich. Bernstein’s Delicatessen hand slices the still-warm corned beef extra thick and they pile it high on a thick slice of Gunn’s Bakery rye. You can order it lean if you are watching your waistline, but since you will just have to have their hand-cut, skinny French fries too, why bother?
On my last visit, I was tempted to order shakshuka, but then the chicken and waffles caught my attention. The “waffles” are really pancakes but who was I to mince words when the pancakes and chicken fingers were served smothered with blueberry compote and chipotle maple syrup?
Also highly recommended are Bernstein’s soups, any of them. If you don’t want to stay, take them to go.
